RE: Lotus Domino at the end of life ~Umberto Nongeroson 24.Jul.03 10:29 AM a Web browser Notes Client All ReleasesAll Platforms
"lotus notes is very limited, "
Lotus Notes is limited to what it's designed for: workflow, document database, distributing and exchanging information. It's not a 'general purpose' solution, like a C-compiler.
"any solution developed with notes is expensive "
If you use Notes to develop the kind of applications where Notes is made for, it's the cheapest platform I know. Once an application has been finished, it can run for years without changing 1 line of code. I have 5 year old applications (R4.x) that stil run without any change. My M$ stuff sometimes refuses to go on when I do something as simple as upgrading my browser...
With a little experience you can develop simple workflow applications in one day, in a secure way. Changes in the design are distributed automatic, without having to send CD's all around ...
"and impossible to move to another environnement."
Of course! The applications developed in Notes use the solid underlying Domino technology, and therefore it can't be run without domino. That's only possible if you develop your application in a General Purpose Development Environment. BUT : then you will have to implement security, routing, replication, ... all by yourself .. not much RAD anymore then, isn't it?
"the only interesting feature in notes is replication, it made sense 10 years ago when bandwith was limited and expensive. now it's useless."
Bandwith was, is, and allways will be limited. My colleagues on the road are very happy that they can replicate their data everywhere with a simple (analogue) 33Kbit telephone connection. Home workers on ADSL or cable have speeds downstream from 1 to 3Mbit, and upstream from 128 to 256Kbit. Lots of application can't do with that. Replication is very useful here.
I'm not blind for the shortcomings of Lotus Notes but the above arguments are all the wrong ones. I'm always amazed what people are expecting from Notes. They want it to be oracle, delphi, Access, Excell and VB in one product. I wouldn't be suprised if there ever was someone that tried to write a CAD-application in Notes...
Notes/domino is a groupware product. If you wanna keep millions of records : use oracle or DB2 or wathever. You wanne have standalone app's : use Delphi or Java or even VB.
If you wanne store, route and search documents in a most secure way: use Notes
